Overview
The Dawnmere is one of the two largest bodies of water to be found in the Fallow Marches, second in size only to the Lake of Dreams. Nearly one hundred miles at the longest dimension, the Dawnmere is roughly half the size of Earth's Lake Ontario, and twice the size of the Great Salt Lake; a good match for Lake Victoria in Africa. To the west, the Eastwall Mountains make for a formidible barrier to any who would seek to enter the Elven Principalities by any route other than the fortress city of Minas Cirith. At the east end, the bustling town of Dawnfalls Landing hosts the merchants of the highly profitable Old trade Road seeking to be ferried across the lake.
Travel east across the lake is rarely difficult, supported by the prevailing winds funneled through the pass. Westbound ferries use a combination of chocobo-driven paddle wheels, wind or water magic, and harnessed large water beasts to make their way.
It is no rumor that the true king of the Dawnmere is Turkonén, an ancient water drake, who usually slumbers somewhere at the bottom of the lake. He only makes his presence felt during particularly bad storms and when the “pathetic mortals” make a mess of things up on the surface. Yes, he calls the Elves that too.
