armor_chart

A modified chart of body armor, based on the Fantasy Hero tables. Player input is welcome in improving this data based on real world experience, or appeals to thematic style. Weights listed are for more-or-less full body coverage. To simplify combat, the GM will assume you have the defense of your largest piece of equipment when it comes to body coverage. (Rafskeg is starting the campaign with a chain hauberk (short sleeve tunic length) leather pants and sleeves, heavy leather boots and gloves, and a steel helm. He is considered DEF 6 overall)

Shell Armor: This being a fantasy universe, any armor involving rigid plates may be constructed using shells instead of metal. Mind you, in this particular approach, we are discussing the use of giant bugs, a general term that includes both land and aquatic arthropods. Shell armor weighs 80% as much as the steel equivalent (or twice as much as aelum, and has one DEF less. Also, stock shell armor has a lower overall durability, tending to crack or snap instead of bend. The advantage of shell is that a skilled craftsman can shape it like plastic, allowing for superior fit and mobility. Shell is also used by most underdark communities where surface dwellers would normally employ wood.
